Bachelor’s degree

Mathematics with a Focus on Teaching

(Bachelor’s degree, 3 years, double-major study, full-time or part-time)

Description of the field of study

The purpose of the field of study is to provide the graduates with a set of mathematical knowledge and skills, methods and procedures in mathematics, through which they will be able to understand and reflect on the need of mathematics and mathematical approaches to resolve current problems.

Graduate profile and job opportunities

The graduates of the Bachelor’s degree will have professional/theoretical knowledge of basic mathematical disciplines. They will gain a basic overview of the structure of mathematics as an elementary school subject and practical skills required to resolve school-level mathematical tasks; they will gain basic knowledge of the theory of education and psychology. The graduates will be knowledgeable about technical and multimedia aids used in education and in other areas. They will have knowledge of one foreign language. At the end of the course the students take the State Final Bachelor’s Examination and defend the Bachelor’s diploma thesis.

The graduates will be qualified to work in the area of education, particularly as assistants and in supporting extracurricular activities of children and youth (state administration staff, corporate management, banking, finance, etc.)

Most of the graduates are expected to continue study in relevant follow-up Master’s programmes under Teaching mathematics for elementary schools.

Master’s degree

Teaching mathematics for lower secondary schools

(Master’s degree, 2 years, double-major study, full-time or part-time)

Description of the field of study

The field of study is intended especially for the graduates of Mathematics with a Focus on Teaching, but is also available to the graduates of similar Bachelor’s programmes from other faculties and universities. The knowledge required for teaching mathematics, which will also be included in the State Final Examination, will be contained in a variety of mandatory, core elective and optional courses.

The graduates will acquire professional as well as didactic competences required for effective teaching (with an emphasis on psychodidactic competences, communication skills, cooperation, promotion of independent thinking and conduct, and education and self-education in the field) and also for continuing in the doctoral degree programme.

Throughout the course of the study, the students gain a comprehensive body of knowledge of the basics of mathematics as a science (set theory, statistics, selected chapters of modern mathematical disciplines, didactic applications of information technology). They acquire the knowledge and skills of the didactics of mathematics and use them in teacher training sessions and reflections. The teacher training disciplines are guaranteed by the Department of Mathematics. Cooperating departments provide study courses of the educational-psychological module and the general course.

Graduate profile and job opportunities

The graduates of the Master’s degree will have professional/theoretical knowledge of a broad range of mathematical disciplines, which is a prerequisite for becoming a high-quality teacher in secondary education. They will have the knowledge of the didactics of mathematics and will be able to use it in the teaching process as part of reflection of teacher training sessions. They will be capable of independent and creative use of ICT in didactic applications of mathematical content.

They will be able to use the knowledge in a creative way in their teaching procedures and educational activities. They will use analytical-synthetic and inductive-deductive thought operations in solving mathematical tasks and in the cognitive process. They will be familiar with modern didactic literature and will be able to use it in the process of innovation of their own teaching competences, including the implementation of the Framework educational programme. They will have the knowledge of one foreign language including the fundamentals of mathematical terminology.

They will be fully qualified and have professional competence to work as mathematics teachers in lower secondary schools.
